Social Justice Poetry

Arm Wrestling | A Social Justice Poem by JD DeHart

I try to teach them,
but they blow paper
out their nose

I try to teach them,
but they wallow on the
dirty floor

I try to teach them,
but they make noises
with their mouths

and try to color instead
and mumble instead
and won’t read instead
and can’t read instead

I try to teach them,
but it is like arm wrestling
a many-limbed mythical
creature

so they teach me instead.
